Annual Forecasting Event 2026 : “Staying Ahead of the Curve: Fundamentals and Discipline in Volatile Markets”

On Thursday 11 June 2026, CFA Society Cyprus held its Annual Forecasting Event at The Landmark Nicosia, under the theme Staying Ahead of the Curve: Fundamentals and Discipline in Volatile Markets. Once again, the Event brought together senior executives from banks and investment institutions across Cyprus and abroad, along with leading voices from the global financial industry.

A Regional Hub for Investment Professionals

The programme featured specialist presentations from speakers representing some of the world’s foremost financial institutions, including HSBC, Goldman Sachs and Julius Baer, who shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities shaping international markets and the broader investment landscape.

Welcoming attendees, CFA Society Cyprus President Constantinos Kourouyiannis highlighted the international character of the event, noting that the presence of speakers and representatives from leading institutions and CFA Societies abroad reflects Cyprus’s growing role as a regional hub for investment professionals.

Discipline Over Prediction

Turning to the theme of the Forum, President Kourouyiannis observed that markets are evolving faster than forecasts can keep pace with, and that the real challenge facing investors is not predicting what comes next but responding to it with discipline and sound judgment.

He pointed to Benjamin Graham’s enduring theory and the concept of “Mr. Market” as a reminder that markets are often driven by sentiment rather than fundamentals. For this reason, he said, investors should not follow the market’s mood but instead assess prices calmly, based on real value and fundamental strength.

He also spoke about the transformative role of artificial intelligence in the investment profession, emphasizing that despite rapid technological progress, judgment, ethics and professional responsibility remain firmly human responsibilities. Addressing participants directly, he noted that dialogue, the exchange of ideas, continuous learning, discipline and ongoing development form the foundation for excellence in the financial profession.

The Future of the European Economy

In his address, Dr. Georgios Theocharides, Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), spoke about the Savings and Investments Union (SIU) and the Markets in Crypto-Assets and Integrated Supervision Proposal (MISP) as strategic steps toward deepening and strengthening European capital markets, with significant implications for the future of the European economy.

The goal, he explained, is to channel European savings more effectively into productive investments, particularly those that support innovation, competitiveness and sustainable growth, while also promoting cross-border integration and ensuring consistent, high-quality supervision across the European Union.

He noted that through cohesive supervision, stronger trust and meaningful cross-border integration, Europe can build a stronger, more resilient and strategically autonomous capital market. He added that a more cohesive and credible supervisory framework can help Europe strengthen its competitiveness, financial stability and long-term sustainable growth.

Closing the Evening: Networking Dinner

The Forum concluded with a networking dinner, giving attendees the opportunity to exchange views, ideas and experiences in a dynamic and collaborative setting, a fitting close to an evening centred on dialogue and shared learning.

Building an Alliance for Financial Education in Cyprus

By Constantinos Kourouyiannis, CFA

The Alliance for Financial Education in Cyprus, led by CFA Society Cyprus, is a collaborative initiative that brings together academia, the investment industry and the CFA community, to strengthen the quality and relevance of financial education in Cyprus and bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. Through joint initiatives such as career events, guest lectures, mentorship and participation in global initiatives of the CFA Institute (such as the CFA Institute Research Challenge), the Alliance seeks to equip students with the technical skills, ethical foundation and industry awareness required to succeed in an increasingly competitive financial environment.

On May 14th, 2026, at 17:00, CFA Society Cyprus is organizing its first annual online career event, to connect university students, CFA Program candidates and young professionals with the CFA Institute, CFA Society Cyprus and leading employers in Cyprus. The CFA Society Cyprus Career Event aims to provide insights into the CFA Program and the investment profession while highlighting career pathways in finance. This event is a direct expression of the Alliance, bringing together key stakeholders under one platform to inspire and inform the next generation of investment professionals in Cyprus.

The most important goals of this Alliance for Financial Education in Cyprus are outlined below:

1. Organize the Annual CFA Society Cyprus Career Event and Support University Outreach

This year, CFA Society Cyprus is organizing the CFA Society Career Event, with the goal of establishing an annual event bringing together CFA Institute, CFA Society Cyprus, local universities and employers offering career opportunities in finance. This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of the CFA designation, the global standard of the investment profession, to connect emerging talent with industry employers and build a strong pipeline of future candidates and members.

The CFA Program has evolved over the years and is aligned with industry demand, with the most recent and significant development being the introduction of three specialized Level III pathways: Portfolio Management, Private Wealth and Private Markets. The CFA Society Cyprus Career Event will offer a unique opportunity for young professionals to hear from the CFA Institute keynote speaker who is actively engaged in the development of the CFA Program curriculum.

The Board of CFA Society Cyprus actively participates in university career events and is also regularly invited to deliver dedicated presentations on the CFA Program and career opportunities in the investment profession. These two channels of engagement complement each other by combining direct interaction with students at career fairs and more structured informational sessions within universities. This engagement will continue, with the aim of deepening relationships with academic institutions, increasing awareness of the CFA designation and supporting students in their transition into investment careers.

2. Support University Participation in the CFA Institute Research Challenge

Another important goal of this Alliance is to continue and enhance its support to local universities participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge by providing mentorship from CFA Charterholders and access to industry expertise and guidance throughout the competition. This initiative aims to strengthen students’ practical skills in equity research, financial analysis, report writing and professional presentation, while fostering closer collaboration between academia and industry.

This competition has been successfully organized by CFA Society Cyprus for more than 12 years and is supported by top employers in Cyprus, offering internship opportunities to university students participating in the competition. The advancement of the University of Cyprus, the winner of the 2026 local competition, to the EMEA regionals is a testament to the high level the local competition has reached. Apart from the CFA Institute Research Challenge global competition, CFA Society Cyprus also supports the winning team’s participation in the Regional Societies Research Challenge, a standalone competition that is organized by CFA Society Emirates in collaboration with other societies in the region.

3. Collaboration with Universities on Seminars, Webinars and Practitioner-Led Lectures

A further objective of CFA Society Cyprus is to collaborate with universities to co-organize joint seminars and webinars on current topics in the investment profession, such as sustainability and ESG investing, artificial intelligence in investment management, portfolio management, risk management and emerging global trends, while also promoting awareness of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Standards. In addition, CFA Society Cyprus will continue supporting its members’ contribution to university lectures by sharing insights on investment management from a practitioner’s perspective, bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application. This ongoing collaboration enhances the academic experience of students, strengthens institutional partnerships and reinforces the Society’s role in promoting both professional excellence and ethical conduct within the investment profession.

CFA Society Cyprus Online Career Event Structure

The CFA Society Cyprus Career Event is structured as a progressive virtual program opening with a welcome address from the President of CFA Society Cyprus, followed by a keynote presentation from Rob Langrick, CFA, CIPM, Chief Product Advocate of CFA Institute, who will provide an in-depth overview of the CFA Program’s structure, the skills candidates develop and how the designation opens doors in finance related professions. CFA Society Cyprus will outline its role in supporting the local academic community and connecting it with the local investment profession and outline the career opportunities available in Cyprus for CFA candidates and charterholders. The event then continues with a series of five-minute presentations from major financial institutions and employers in Cyprus, each introducing their organization and highlighting graduate or early-career opportunities available to CFA candidates. The event concludes with a Q&A session, offering participants the chance to engage directly with the CFA Institute keynote speaker, employers and industry representatives.

The Alliance for Financial Education in Cyprus brings together CFA Institute, CFA Society Cyprus, academia and the investment industry with a shared purpose: to build a stronger and ethically grounded financial profession in Cyprus that places the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Standards at its core. By bringing together universities, aspiring professionals and employers, the CFA Society Cyprus Online Career Event supports the growth of Cyprus’ investment ecosystem.

Inclusive Behaviours and Better Business Outcomes: Why Financial Firms Should Endorse the CFA Institute Inclusion Code

By Dr. Stella Mourouzidou Damtsa, CFA
Board Member and Inclusion (DEI) Committee Chair

The strongest organisations are built on technical expertise, sound processes, ambitious goals, and a culture that allows people to contribute fully. A healthy organisational culture strengthens the quality of dialogue in meetings, encourages openness to different perspectives, supports constructive challenge, and enables people to do their best work. Inclusive behaviour plays an important role in shaping that kind of environment. In professions such as finance, which are built on trust and long-term responsibility, inclusive behaviour is closely connected to organisational quality and business performance.

CFA Institute has given that connection a practical and professional framework. In its European Inclusion Code material, CFA Institute describes diversity, equity and inclusion work as mission-aligned with its broader purpose of promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for the ultimate benefit of society. Such language is important because it places inclusion within the professional standards of the investment industry rather than outside them. The CFA Institute approach presents inclusion as part of how firms lead well, build credibility, and serve clients and society responsibly.

The value of the CFA Institute framework also lies in its practicality. At the heart of the European Inclusion Code are three clear objectives: to meet the industry where it is, to define practical principles that firms can implement from a realistic foundation, and to provide a metrics-based reporting framework designed to produce meaningful, aggregated and benchmarked data. The Code also focuses on concrete areas that shape institutional life, including pipeline, talent acquisition, promotion and retention, leadership, influence, and measurement. In the European context, the framework is being developed with local CFA societies so that shared principles are supported by implementation guidance and country-specific context.

Investment management, banking, and financial services depend heavily on the quality and agility of their teams. Good decisions are strengthened when professionals feel able to raise concerns, offer alternative views, and challenge consensus before action is taken. A culture that invites contribution from people with different experiences and perspectives is more likely to support rigorous discussion, sharper judgement, and stronger collective intelligence. Inclusive behaviour therefore supports not only fairness and belonging, but also the quality of analysis and decision-making in an environment shaped by constant change and disruption.

Beyond the principles themselves, the Inclusion Code speaks about promoting adoption across the investment industry, sharing tested practices, collaborating with peers, and making the economic, business, and moral case for Inclusion. The material also states that integrating Inclusion can improve investment outcomes and enhance business success. Inclusion builds better functioning teams, stronger institutions, and more resilient business outcomes.

The senior leadership of an organisation is central to that effort. Inclusive cultures are built not only through formal policies, but through the tone from the top, repeated decisions and visible behaviours: who is invited into important conversations, whose potential is recognised, who receives stretch opportunities, how disagreement is handled, and whether leaders create space for honest challenge. Measurement is equally important. The CFA Institute framework places measurement alongside leadership and influence, signalling that progress should be observable, intentional, and supported by accountability. The combination of behaviour and measurement gives firms a realistic path from principle to practice.

Industry momentum suggests that many organisations already recognise the importance of that path. CFA Institute’s material notes that investment leaders are taking ownership of Inclusion, supported by internal experts and advocates, while recognised standards, industry data, accountability, and client expectations are helping sustain progress. The European adaptation of the Code, developed with local CFA members and societies, reflects the same ambition: a shared framework with room for local legal, regulatory, and cultural context. That combination of common principles and practical adaptation gives the work both credibility and relevance.

Wider business research points in a similar direction. A recent Grant Thornton report, although focused specifically on gender, found links between diversity initiatives and stronger innovation, better decision-making, improved financial performance, and stronger talent attraction. The broader lesson extends beyond any single category of diversity: organisations that make inclusion visible, credible, and measurable are often better placed to attract talent, strengthen culture, and support performance.

CFA Society Cyprus is already supporting this agenda through the work of its Inclusion Committee. The Committee’s objectives include raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and influencing policy, while its recent initiatives have included signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Diversity Charter Cyprus, engaging with Regulators on KPI development and data gathering, contributing comments on equal pay regulation, publishing inclusion-focused articles, recording public-awareness podcasts, and promoting the CFA Inclusion Code through strategic collaborations and events. This gives the conversation a practical local dimension and shows that inclusion is being advanced both in principle and through concrete action.

This commitment will be reinforced through CFA Society Cyprus’s upcoming webinar with Sarah Maynard, which offers a timely opportunity for financial professionals, business leaders, and firms in Cyprus to engage directly with the business case for inclusion. The discussion will highlight how inclusive behaviours contribute to stronger teams, better decisions, and more sustainable business outcomes, while also encouraging firms to consider endorsing the CFA Institute Inclusion Code. For organisations seeking practical ways to strengthen culture, leadership, and performance, the webinar is a timely and action-oriented forum for engagement.

For financial firms, the next step is clear. Firms should review their practices against the principles of the CFA Institute Inclusion Code and move toward endorsement with seriousness and intent. Endorsement is more than a public statement. It is a commitment to leadership, accountability, measurement, and progress. At a time when financial institutions are being asked to demonstrate resilience, credibility, and long-term value, endorsing the Inclusion Code is an opportunity to strengthen culture, decision-making, and trust. Firms that want stronger teams and better business outcomes should not stand at the edge of this conversation. They should lead it.

Διακυβέρνηση (G): Ποιος οδηγεί το πλοίο;

Sustainable Wealth: Why “Smart Money Talks” Must Include ESG

Introducing Environmental, Social, and Governance Concepts to Cyprus’s Gen Z for Global Money Week 2026

Introduction

For decades, the financial world operated on a singular, cold metric: the bottom line. Success was measured exclusively by the size of the return, often ignoring the “collateral damage” left behind in the pursuit of profit.

The younger generation—Generation Z—is proving to be significantly more sensitive to the well-being of the People and our Planet than any generation before them. For them, money is no longer a neutral tool; it is an extension of their identity. They demand that their financial actions reflect their ethical convictions, seeking investments that leave a positive footprint rather than a scar on the world.

The purpose of this article is to advocate for impactful financial literacy initiatives to help the younger generation become better educated and understand that Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) principles should be an integral part of the financial decision-making process to achieve sustainable wealth and long-term financial resilience. This is aligned with the main focus of this year’s Global Money Week (“GMW”) campaign that took place between March 16-22, 2026 with the theme ” Smart money talks”.

Redefining Sustainability: Profit with Longevity and Well-Being

At the CFA Society Cyprus, our mission is to provide the financial literacy and education necessary to align our youth with global trends, including sustainability. This was clearly communicated to the public via the recent publication of the Vision and Strategic Objectives of CFA Society Cyprus for 2026. We believe it is time to reclaim the word “Sustainable.” In a financial context, sustainability is not an act of charity—it is a strategy for survival and success. To be truly sustainable is to sustain our very ability to generate wealth and prosperity by ensuring the systems we rely on—our environment and our society—remain healthy and functional.

This is not a theoretical debate. In Cyprus, the climate crisis is a daily reality. We see it in the chronic lack of water that threatens our agriculture and the devastating wildfires that scar our landscapes every summer. Incorporating ESG principles into our “Smart Money Talks” is, therefore, the ultimate form of risk management.

De-mystifying ESG: Making the Concepts Accessible

To have a “Smart Money Talk,” we must first speak the same language. While ESG might sound like institutional jargon, it is essentially a toolkit for understanding how a company interacts with the world. Contrary to popular opinion, ESG is much more than just recycling and reducing carbon emissions. Think of it as a three-dimensional lens that looks beyond the simple profit-and-loss statement to reveal the true health of an investment.

Environmental (E): Our Island’s Survival

In 2026, the “E” is no longer an abstract concept for Cyprus—it is an emergency. With our reservoir levels currently at a critically low capacity, the environmental pillar is about resource resilience. For a young investor, this means asking: “Does this company have a plan for water scarcity?” or “How is it transitioning to renewables to avoid the rising costs of carbon?” It’s about ensuring the businesses you put your money into today don’t run dry tomorrow.

Social (S): The Human Connection

The “Social” pillar examines how a company manages its relationships with people. In our digital age, this includes data privacy—ensuring your personal information isn’t being exploited—and diversity, which research consistently shows leads to better innovation. It’s also about ethical supply chains; Gen Z is rightly unwilling to profit from labour exploitation or unsafe working conditions.

Governance (G): Who is Steering the Ship?

Governance is about the “rules of the game.” It looks at transparency, executive pay, and the absence of corruption. At the CFA Society Cyprus, we emphasize that strong governance is the ultimate guardrail. It ensures that the people in charge are accountable to you, the shareholder, and aren’t taking reckless risks for short-term bonuses.

The “Smart” Connection: E-S-G

The brilliance of ESG is that it spots long-term risks that a standard balance sheet often misses. By using this lens, you can identify possible “Stranded Assets”—companies so tied to outdated, harmful practices that they are destined to become obsolete. In 2026, being a smart investor means realizing that ethical business isn’t just “nice”; it is the most robust way to build lasting wealth.

The Global Appetite: From Interest to Implementation

According to a Morgan Stanley survey undertaken in March 2025, an unprecedented 99% of Gen Z investors are interested in sustainable investing, with approximately half of them indicating that they expected sustainable investments could offer stronger financial returns than traditional investments. Gen Z were also more likely to choose a financial advisor or investment platform based on their sustainable investing offering compared to the older generations.

Recent data from Morningstar reveals that approximately half of all mutual funds used by European investors have an ESG focus. This is in stark contrast to a 2025 Financial Literacy paper by the OECD which indicates that only 10% of Cypriot investors hold financial products labelled as sustainable, or ESG, or green. This suggests that there is a huge opportunity for improving the financial literacy surrounding the benefits of including ESG factors in the investment decision making process for Cypriots.

Building Sustainable Financial Resilience: Strategies for Young People

Financial literacy is the most important pillar for achieving financial resilience. Understanding basic financial concepts such as saving and investing for the long-term, compounding, inflation, economic growth and portfolio diversification, can empower young people to develop a robust roadmap for achieving their financial objectives.

Including sustainability or ESG factors within the investment process should be considered as an additional but useful tool which can help with better managing risks and taking advantage of opportunities. This is why, according to the relevant legislation, the risk appetite and investment objectives must be determined before any sustainability or ESG preferences are evaluated for investors.

Resources for ESG and sustainable investing can be found in books, websites, and specialized workshops. In Cyprus, the CySEC is the primary regulatory body focused on supervising ESG matters but also educating the public in this respect. Several other organizations including non-profits such as the CFA Society Cyprus are also active in advocating for sustainability within the investment process.

Importantly, qualified investment professionals with a fiduciary duty to assess an individual’s unique circumstance and goals, including their sustainability preferences, can provide support to investors and aspiring investors on their journey to achieve sustainable financial resilience.

Conclusion

Global Money Week 2026 has shown us that the language of wealth has changed. To be a ‘Smart’ investor today is to realize that financial success is inseparable from the health of our environment and society.

For the next generation in Cyprus, ESG is more than an acronym—it is a shield against a volatile future. At the CFA Society Cyprus, our mission is to move our youth from passive interest to active ownership. By educating the next generation to demand transparency from local financial institutions, we turn ethical intent into tangible resilience. In 2026, we don’t just want money that grows; we want money that also works for the world. Because when ‘Smart Money Talks,’ it asks for proof of impact, not just a green-coloured brochure. Let’s make sure Cyprus is ready to answer.

Kyriacos Inios, CFA: The market punishes panic and rewards patience

As part of CFA Society Cyprus’ investor education efforts, we are pleased to share insights from Kyriacos Inios, CFA, Secretary of the CFA Society Board of Directors. In his article, Kyriacos reflects on the market volatility of early April 2025, when investor fear peaked: the S&P 500 dropped -4.8% on April 3 and -6.0% on April 4, before rebounding sharply by nearly +10% on April 9.

This period serves as an important reminder for investors:

  • The best market days often occur near the worst ones.

  • Missing just a few strong days can significantly impact long-term returns.

  • Having a plan matters:

    • 0–12 months: cash or cash equivalents (e.g., T-bills)

    • 1–5 years: more stable income assets (e.g., bonds)

    • 5+ years: growth assets (e.g., equities)

Kyriacos asks an important question: What’s your rule for staying disciplined when headlines get loud?

Cyprus Credit Rating Upgrades: What They Mean for Households and Businesses

Kyriacos Inios, CFA, Secretary of CFA Society Cyprus, recently appeared on Protoselido on SIGMA TV to discuss the implications of favorable assessments by international credit rating agencies for the Cypriot economy. The interview was conducted in Greek.

During the discussion, Kyriacos explained how improved credit ratings reflect increased confidence in the country’s economic outlook and institutional credibility. He highlighted that stronger ratings contribute to lower government borrowing costs, enhanced investor confidence and greater financial stability. These developments can affect households and businesses by supporting higher economic activity, stronger job creation, and improved overall macroeconomic conditions.

The conversation also emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline and continuing structural reforms to safeguard these positive trends and ensure that economic benefits are sustainable over the long term.

CFA Society Cyprus would like to thank SIGMA TV, Protoselido, and Andreas Dimitropoulos for the invitation and the constructive discussion.
