Αν ακόμη μας έλεγαν πως σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις θα καταθέταμε χρήματα στη τράπεζα, στην ουσία δηλαδή θα δανείζαμε τη τράπεζα, και θα χρεωνόμαστε κάποιο κόστος, σίγουρα θα τους περνάγαμε για τρελούς. Δυστυχώς όμως, τα μηδενικά και αρνητικά επιτόκια είναι πλέον γεγονός. Οι Κυπριακές τράπεζες, με μερικά χρόνια καθυστέρηση σε σχέση με τις μεγάλες Ευρωπαϊκές τράπεζες, ειδοποίησαν στις αρχές του χρόνου τους θεσμικούς καταθέτες τους, ότι πλέον ορισμένες καταθέσεις τους θα «κερδίζουν» αρνητικό επιτόκιο. Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με τα κρατικά ομόλογα. Την ώρα που γράφεται αυτό το άρθρο, τα ομόλογα της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας που λήγουν σε λιγότερο από δυο χρόνια αποφέρουν γύρω στο -0,35% ανά έτος. Με άλλα λόγια, για να δανείσει κάποιος την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, με χρέος που αναμένεται να ανεβεί σε επίπεδα άνω του 110% του ΑΕΠ το 2020 και που η οικονομία της έχει να αντιμετωπίσει τον αντίκτυπο της πανδημίας, κυρίως στη τουριστική βιομηχανία, και το μεγάλο ποσοστό μη-εξυπηρετούμενων δανείων στο τραπεζικό σύστημα, θα πρέπει να πληρώνει επιπλέον 0,35 ευρώ για κάθε 100 ευρώ δανεισμού. Ομολογουμένως, οι συνθήκες στις οποίες ζούμε, τουλάχιστον στο χρηματοπιστωτικό τομέα, είναι πρωτόγνωρες. Ως μέσω άσκησης νομισματικής πολιτικής η Ευρωπαϊκή Κεντρική Τράπεζα εδώ και κάποια χρόνια «τιμωρεί» τη πλεονάζουσα ρευστότητα των τραπεζών σε Ευρώ με αρνητικό επιτόκιο. Με τη σειρά τους οι τράπεζες μετακυλούν αυτό το κόστος στους καταθέτες. Όπως όλα δείχνουν, αυτή η εικόνα θα παραμείνει για αρκετό καιρό ακόμα. Τα υπερμεγέθη ποσά χρέους που εκδόθηκαν από τις κυβερνήσεις, παγκόσμια, για τη στήριξη των οικονομιών τους και την αντιμετώπιση του οικονομικού πλήγματος της πανδημίας του Covid-19, η μακροχρόνια σχετικά χαμηλή ανάπτυξη και οι παγκόσμιες αποπληθωριστικές τάσεις, πιθανόν να ωθήσουν, ή μάλλον να αναγκάσουν, τις κεντρικές τράπεζες να διατηρήσουν τα επιτόκια σε χαμηλά επίπεδα για αρκετά ακόμα χρονιά. Αν και το περιβάλλον των μηδενικών επιτοκίων προβληματίζει τους καταθέτες παγκόσμια, μπορούμε να το αντιμετωπίσουμε ως μια ευκαιρία. Δηλαδή, όπως και με άλλους τομείς της καθημερινής μας ζωής, η πανδημία του Covid-19 μπορεί να επιταχύνει διαρθρωτικές αλλαγές και στον τρόπο διαχείρισης των οικονομικών μας θεμάτων. Δυστυχώς, οι περίοδοι που καταθέταμε το κεφάλαιό μας σε ένα τραπεζικό ίδρυμα, με 5% και 6% επιτόκιο έχουν παρέλθει. Η διαχείριση χρηματοοικονομικών θεμάτων, είτε αυτή αφορά στην αποταμίευση για συνταξιοδοτικούς σκοπούς είτε στον γενικότερο οικονομικό μας προγραμματισμό, έχει γίνει πιο σύνθετη. Η επένδυση πλέον γίνεται συνώνυμο της αποταμίευσης και γίνεται μέρος της ζωής μας. Το χαρτοφυλάκιο κάποιου νοικοκυριού θα πρέπει πλέον να σχεδιάζεται με κανόνες συνετής διαχείρισης, ούτως ώστε να βοηθήσει στην επίτευξη των οικονομικών στόχων, βραχυπρόθεσμων ή μακροπρόθεσμων, και την αποφυγή περιττών κινδύνων.
